Operating systems often require the application of additional controls to enhance their security to an acceptable level. For example, leaving significant configuration functions freely available can be an exposure where a system is shared. Allowing the free install of any software by anyone is potentially another exposure. Unfortunately there are many many more examples.

To get a grip of this situation the recommended option is usually to emply a security package. These will vary from platform to platform, but for Windows we have identified a particularly flexible system.
